Discovering Your Gifts, Uncovering Your Passion and Finding Joy

There is something special about doing something that you love. Your whole mind, body and spirit seem to know that what you’re doing is your true passion and it radiates with positive energy. I am sure you have experienced those good vibes in that past, where you are just in love with life.

That to me is wellness. When you are in balance in all areas of your life and feeling content, feeling peace and experience joy.

When you are aligned with your passion that feeling of well-being comes a lot easier and you feel like you are in the flow. The problem is that many people either don’t know their true passion, and we typically have many areas that are our passion, or they do know their passion but do not follow it.

I can relate to that actually as early in my life I ignored my true passion of Yoga, Wellness and Pilates and chose a life as an attorney. For those of you who know me that didn’t end too well for me. I ended up getting really sick and living on anti-anxiety meds and I was totally depressed.

After a long period of healing, I lived my passion and purpose in life and became very successful at what I do, but that didn’t mean I felt fulfilled in all areas of my life.
Discovering Your Gifts, Uncovering Your Passion and Finding Joy
To me there are other areas of life that we may also have a passion for. Now that may not mean you want to do that as a career, but it is a powerful interest that becomes essential for you to include into your life in order to feel fulfilled.

For example, to some that may be spinning or knitting or running or riding horses or reading history books or whatever.

Even though these are interests and not a career path for us, it is still super important that we acknowledge them and commit to including them in our life otherwise, we will feel out of balance.

So to give you an example from my life, as I live my dream every day of my life with my career. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even though I am pretty busy and travel a lot I do manage to still fit in my other passions of Yoga and Exercise on a daily basis and have plenty of quality family time too.

However, my business requires a pretty hands on experience in terms of running my social media. That means I commit to about three posts per day every single day. I love it but I must admit it does become a burdensome at times. Sometimes I just want some time off, but I know how it affects my audience and business if I do that.

Now I could have gone on a good old negative complaining session and cursed this part of my business, but I didn’t. Instead I became curious as to why I had this love / hate relationship with it. Why did I enjoy doing it, but then felt like it was burdensome at times?

When I did this exercise I realized why I actually love it. Firstly, I love interacting with people, but mostly because I actually enjoy the photography aspect of it. As technology has evolved and it is easier to pull out your phone and take a photo, I take so many photos every single day.

So the point of this all is that by first being aware of the way I felt, I actually uncovered one of my passions that had been missing in my life for so long…photography. If I had just been in a state of complaining then I would never have found that passion.

Now I have invested in a nice fancy camera and take it everywhere. Currently I am in Europe for three weeks and my passion is burning so bright. I am in my element capturing the images of the architecture and street scenes. I have a new found love and passion for photography and this is all because I was aware in the first place.

So here are some tips to help you uncover your passion and experience more joy:
  • Become aware - sometimes it can reveal itself to you as a loud roar and at other times as a whisper. The only way you will ever hear the whisper of your passion calling for you is if you pay attention. Even in those “mundane” or “tedious” situations you may uncover your passion.
  • Ignore the opinion of others - too often we are taped out of pursuing something of meaning to us by our partners, friends or family. They will tell us “no…that is not you,” or “there is no money in that” or “oh that is really, really difficult, you’re wasting your time” Turn off that commentary and go with your gut.
  • Trust your inner wisdom - Allow your inner voice and wisdom to be heard and trust it. That constant nagging within that says you should be doing more of “this” means your inner voice is telling you to follow your inner desire.
  • Your Passion is intwined with many areas of your life - Like I said in my example, your passion is sometimes hidden in the not so obvious places. For me it was intwined and buried in my daily tasks.
  • Allow you passion to flourish - If you think you have discovered your passion, and it involves major change in your life to incorporate more of it. Don’t ignore it, but at the same time, there is no need to rush it. Too many people try to force it along and then they run into problems. As soon as a problem arises, they then automatically think they made a mistake and abandon their passion. Allow your passion to evolve and reveal itself over time.
  • Take action - when you hear that inner voice say go and you feel the powerful energy within, you know you have that passion and run with it. Focus on the now and enjoy every second of it.
You can do this every day and every second of the day, by simply being present and aware and allowing you true self to shine through.
